It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
The 2026 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, a 76-foot tall Englemann Spruce was harvested on 24 October 2026 from the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest in Idaho. It is scheduled to begin its 2,500-plus mile journey to the West lawn of the Nation’s Capital following a series of community celebrations and Whistle Stops in various cities along the way.
So, what does J. J. Keller do? Our Permits team helps ensure the safe transportation of the tree through the numerous states and municipalities on its route by evaluating the best roadways for the tree and accompanying vehicles and securing the proper regulatory permits.
Moving a load this size takes careful planning — and the Capitol Tree Tour adds a unique twist. Unlike most oversize loads, which head to a single destination along major interstates and highways with limited local coordination, this tour makes multiple community stops, bringing the tree onto local roads that rarely see trucks this large. We are working with each community to finalize the right route and obtain the necessary permissions and permits.
This year’s theme, “Over the River and Through the Woods,” captures the journey perfectly: there are 16 stops in Idaho alone, with much of the route winding through rural, mountainous areas. Small communities take center stage, including towns with just 250–500 residents. Planning often begins with finding the right local contact, then working together to determine what’s needed. Members of our Permits team are coordinating with event organizers, National Park law enforcement escorts, drivers, and state and local offices and officials.
We’re so excited to follow along the tree’s journey this year. We’ll share updates throughout the tree’s trip across the U.S. and some fun facts about the cities it’s visiting along the way. If you live in Idaho, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Minnesota, Illinois, West Virginia, Maryland or Pennsylvania, you might get to see the tree up close and personal and even sign the trailer.
